Ecological Impact

Factory farms create a serious threat to our environment. With the large numbers of animals they are able to cram in, it is no wonder that one single farm can produce more waste than an entire town! And, this waste is not disposed of properly. It is either left sitting in huge waste lagoons, or left on the land to erode the soil and runoff into our water supplies! In addition to land erosion and water pollution, they also create a large amount of air pollution. The gases these animals release and the odors coming from these farms threaten air quality and public health as well.

Environmental Consequences of Animal Factories
Factory farms, which mass-produce animals in assembly-line fashion, have harmed aquatic life, human health and ecosystems across the nation. The vast burden of manure they are generating inevitably create environmental disasters. They produce 130 times the waste of humans, and this tremendous amount of animal waste is poisoning our water and air.

The Assault on Water and Soil
Animal feed contains heavy metals like copper, nickel and manganese. Because animals do not completely digest all of this, it ends up in the manure. This manure not only spreads and accumulates on the soil, but also destroys the land, making it toxic for plants to grow there. Furthermore, run offs from the fields also flushes the manure, along with its metals, into waterways and public drinking supply watersheds.

The Problems With Excessive Manure
Disposal of manure is a big problem. Spreading waste on the ground leads to odor problems and water pollution when more manure is applied than the surrounding land can absorb. And decomposing manure emits hazardous gases that degrade air quality.
